This is a question every leader asks himself.
Leading people is not only an awesome responsibility, it is a great time to learn about God’s guidance. Just recently I have been reading in the book of Exodus. As I was reading, I came across the story of Moses. He was a remarkable man.
Let’s read about when God called Moses to lead the Israelites and let’s see if we can learn a few things about leadership…
10 Therefore, come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, so that you may bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt. 11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?” 12 And He said, “Certainly I will be with you, and this shall be a sign to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God at this mountain.”
In Exodus 3, I see a few things to notice: a. Exo. 3:10- says …”I will send you….” Before Moses completely understood what God was going to do, God gave Moses an invitation. God’s invitation was to “come now”. God was inviting Moses to take part in something that Moses could not do alone. It was an overwhelming job…. To go to Pharaoh and ask for the release of the Israelites!!
Think about what God has called us (Sports Outreach Leaders) to do! God has called us to be a part of changing people’s lives. Can we do that? Absolutely not! Only God can change lives. The best we can do is influence people.
The mission and the task are bigger than we are. It‘s an impossible job. That is what God has called us to do.
But God doesn’t leave Moses hanging… b. Exo. 3:12- says…”Certainly I will be with you…”
Don’t you love that way that phrase is worded! It begins with “CERTAINLY”. Certainly is defined as: without doubt, reliable, known for sure.
It would be like saying “God will be with Moses throughout his journey and there can be no doubt about it, it’s a done deal.”
But God doesn’t stop there, He gives Moses a promise that he will return and worship God here on this very mountain where Moses is receiving this promise.
As a Sports Outreach Leader we can know of that same CERTAINITY. In the great commission (Matt. 28:20) God promises “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” God promises in Matt 18:20, “For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there is their midst.”
Sports Outreach Leaders who are called by God to reach people for Christ through the vehicle, the medium of sports CAN and SHOULD HAVE the same assurance of Moses…God will be with you.
Are we going to doubt and waver? Probably. Moses did. Just read Exodus 4:10-12. But God not only answered Moses’ doubt, God gave the solution.
God’s plan to reach this world for Christ is YOU. And as a Sports Outreach Leader we must recognize that:
- God has called us, and
- CERTAINLY God will be with us!
